SPEECH OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA, PROFESSOR M. U. ADIKWU ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2016/2017 MATRICULATION CEREMONY OF THE CENTRE FOR DISTANCE LEARNING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION (CDL&CE), OCTOBER 28, 2017

With gratitude to God, I welcome you all to the 2016/2017 matriculation ceremony of our CDL program. Those of you matriculating today should count yourselves lucky to have been admitted into our prestigious program as we had to meticulously sieve through thousands of applications in order to get the most qualified for the program.

As you matriculate today, I share in your joy as matriculants of this great university and wish to call on you to prepare yourselves for the task of nation-building. As you are aware, we are a nation at the threshold of crisis of unemployment. This has exacerbated many social problems such as cultism, kidnapping, sexual harassment and religious extremism. We at the University of Abuja have zero tolerance for all these vices in addition to examination malpractice and truancy among others.

Students involved in these vices are usually subjected to appropriate disciplinary measure to serve as deterrent to others. I urge you to scrupulously avoid any of these behaviours that will give you, your family and the University a bad name. You are encouraged to embrace the virtue of self-discipline, hard work and perseverance.

You will be given the student handbook which contains all the necessary information on your conduct here after the matriculation ceremony. Take time and read through it carefully in order to acquaint yourselves with the basic rule on examination and interpersonal relationship among others.

Finally, I want to congratulate you for this bold step taken to participate in the CDL program. I wish you well on the program.

Thank you for your attention and God bless.
